Xiaowei Xu, MD, PhD, is the Founders Professor in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Professor of Dermatology and serves as the Vice Chair for Translational and Clinical Research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Fudan University Shanghai School of Medicine in China and a PhD in Pharmacology from Wake Forest University in North Carolina. Dr. Xu completed his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a fellowship in Dermatopathology at Harvard Medical School. He is board-certified in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, and Dermatopathology. Dr. Xu’s research focuses on developing CAR-T cell and extracellular vesicle-based therapies for melanoma and other skin diseases. He has participated in over 20 clinical trials, including the pivotal clinical studies that led to FDA approval of vemurafenib for BRAFV600E-mutant melanoma and imatinib for KIT-mutant melanoma. His laboratory is highly productive, publishing over 300 peer-reviewed articles, with a Google Scholar h-index of 96 and over 43,000 citations. He has been recognized multiple times as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Web of Science. In addition to his research, Dr. Xu is the Chief Editor of Hair Therapy & Transplantation and the Associate Editor of Lever’s Histopathology of the Skin. He has received numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Pathologist Award from the Chinese American Pathologists Association and the 2018-2025 "Top Doctors" recognition from Philadelphia Magazine. As an educator, he has trained hundreds of residents, fellows, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers.
