Prof. Olusegun Isaac Alatise has been a Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, and a Consultant General Surgeon at the Teaching Hospital. His area of interest is surgical oncology and gastroenterology. He received his Surgical Oncology training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, USA. He has also had other training fellowships in Endoscopy and Colorectal Surgery sponsored by the World Gastroenterology Organization, the African Middle East Association of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, and the International Council of Coloproctology. He has attended numerous national and international meetings as a resource person and is a member of several national and international organizations in his field of interest. He is a leader and a trainer in Surgical Oncology and Gastroenterology in Nigeria. He is the immediate past Secretary-General of the Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN) and the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Chapter of the International Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association. He is the Vice President (West Africa) of AORTIC. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology African Regional Council. In 2023, he was appointed Adjunct Professor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
He co-founded the African Research Group for Oncology (ARGO) in 2013. The group operates a clinical database and biobank for patients with colorectal and breast cancer. He is a member of the Lancet Oncology Commission on Global Cancer Surgery. He is also a Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) on multiple prospective colorectal and breast cancer studies in Nigeria, including a UG3/UH3 NIH grant (awarded in 2017), an R01, and a Cancer Prevention grant in 2020. His team received the Oak Foundation Award in 2021 and the D43 Award in 2022. They also got another R01 grant in 2023, a P20 in 2024, and an IHBPA HPBridge Grant in 2025. In 2013, he participated in the African Cancer Leader Institute. In 2016, he was selected as one of the ‘50 for 50’ upcoming global cancer leaders by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In 2017, he was awarded the prestigious Prof T.A.I received the Grillo Excellence in Research Award from the University. In 2023, the university, through the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, presented him with an award of excellence in grantsmanship in recognition of the numerous grants he had secured for the university. He has trained over 40 general surgeons, many of whom are interested in surgical oncology, and has taken faculty positions in Nigeria. He has over 200 peer-reviewed publications and four chapters.
