Surgical Oncologist
Duke University Medical Center
Durham, North Carolina, United States
Daniel P. Nussbaum, MD is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine. A hepatobiliary surgical oncologist, clinical trialist, and translational researcher, he completed medical school at the University of Southern California (2011), followed by general surgery residency at Duke University (2019) and surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (2021). Since returning to the faculty at Duke, he has helped establish the clinical trials program for patients with localized pancreas cancer, and expand the translational research footprint within that disease space. To that end, his specific interest is in developing clinical trials aimed at reducing metastatic recurrence in patients with potentially operable pancreatic cancer. He serves as Deputy Director of the Duke Pancreatic Cancer Center and Co-Director of the Duke Pancreatic Cancer Research Laboratory, where his translational research is centered on hepatic occult metastatic disease, and how the liver immune microenvironment governs recurrence and metastatic progression. His work is currently supported externally by the NIH/NCI Early-Stage Surgeon Scientist Program, the Marc Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, and the American Cancer Society, as well as internally via the DST SPARK Program and the Physician-Scientist Strong Start Program. He is an active mentor to trainees within the Duke Pancreatic Cancer Research Laboratory and Surgical Oncology Research Group, and serves as the Assistant Program Director of the Surgery Research Fellowship Program.
