Astrid Botty van den Bruele, MD is a Breast Surgical Oncologist at Duke University. She began her career as an undergraduate at University of Florida, where she was the recipient of the University Scholar Award. She then went on as a research assistant at the National Institutes of Health, National Institutes of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders prior to proceeding to medical school. She stayed in her native Northern Virginia/ Washington DC area to complete her medical training at Howard University College of Medicine. She then went on to general surgery residency at the University of Florida, where she was the chief administrative resident. Following residency, Dr. Botty completed her training in Breast Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Botty is currently Associate Professor of Surgery at Duke University. She is also the Associate Program Director of the Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship.
Her research interests include breast cancer disparities, breast cancer recurrence and young women with breast cancer. Dr. Botty has authored multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, has presented nationally, and is a member the Women in Cancer Surgery Working Group for the Society for Surgical Oncology. She is also an SSO Presidential Scholar.
