The pace of important discoveries and new concepts has increased significantly in recent years. Landmark advances that impact the field of surgical oncology come forth regularly in translational science, clinic trials, epidemiology, and basic science. It is challenging for surgical oncologists to attend a broad array of meetings relevant to their practice and read all of the important journal articles to stay current. Moreover, resources are shrinking for travel to meetings, society dues and journal subscription fees, resulting in greater selectivity in which meetings to attend. The volume and pace of new information have even forced some surgeons to retreat from areas where they have not kept up.
The goal of this session is to provide members and audience with the past year’s top advances that impact surgical oncology. Important results presented at society meetings, published in journals, and covered in the media from the past year will be summarized and presented in an engaging manner. The top works will be drawn from translational science, clinic trials, epidemiology, and basic science. The talks will be divided into three subspecialty fields. Speakers will also discuss the ramifications of these top advances to surgical oncology.
The three subspecialties selected for this proposal reflect the interests of the majority of the Society (e.g. breast, melanoma and soft tissue tumors, HPB).
