Russell is a fourth-year resident in general surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania who is planning to pursue a career in surgical oncology. He earned his M.D. from the University of Chicago, graduating as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, and his M.P.H. in Health Policy from Harvard University, during which time he worked as a Public Health Fellow in the office of Massachusetts State Senator Jo Comerford.
He graduated magna cum laude from Boston College with a BS in Biology and a minor in Medical Humanities. At Boston College, he was a recipient of the Gabelli Presidential Scholarship—a four-year, merit-based award—and served as president of the student body.
Russell was chosen to deliver his speech entitled "Politics are public health, social change is medicine" at the Harvard School of Public Health 2020 commencement exercises. He has previously worked at Human Rights Watch in New York City where he researched opioid prescription policy, the development of universal health coverage systems, and HIV/AIDS care for transgender women and men; this work was supported by the University of Chicago Pozen Family Center for Human Rights.
