Dr. Elizabeth Mittendorf is a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Chief of the Division of Breast Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Chief of Multidisciplinary Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She earned her MD at Case Western Reserve University, a PhD in Immunology from The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston, and a master’s degree in Healthcare Management from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
A surgical oncologist and physician-scientist, Dr. Mittendorf has devoted her career to advancing breast cancer treatment and outcomes through both clinical care and translational research. Her laboratory and clinical trial portfolio focused on breast tumor immunology and the integration of immunotherapy into the treatment of early-stage disease, including pioneering efforts with cancer vaccines and immune checkpoint blockade. She has authored more than 350 original research articles in peer-reviewed journals and has been continuously funded by the NIH, Department of Defense, and leading foundations to include the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Komen for the Cure and the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy. A dedicated mentor, she has trained numerous surgical oncology fellows, residents, and junior faculty who have gone on to academic careers across the country.
Dr. Mittendorf is also a nationally recognized leader in oncology, leading committees for the National Cancer Institute, the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium. She is deeply engaged in shaping the future of oncology through the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), where she currently serves as President-Elect and will assume the presidency in 2026.
