We will discuss the development of TIL therapy and the data leading to TIL (lifileucel) becoming a standard-of-care option for patients with advanced melanoma. Surgeons play an essential part of the multidisciplinary team required for successful TIL therapy since surgical resection of a tumor for TIL harvest is the first but crucial step. Methods to optimize TIL harvest will be outlined. Lastly, we will present state-of-the-art developments in modified TIL therapy aiming to improve the clinical efficacy of TIL while decreasing side effects.
